  • Composed of only thin films: polymer layers, LED arrays on a sub-millimeter flexible PCBs and thin plastic housings, AURAFLEX is made to perform while maintaining an extremely low profile design.

  • Actuators typically have metals used in their construction such as stainless steel, copper coils and magnets that contribute largely to the overall weight. With minimal dense components, AURAFLEX can remain lightweight while providing actuation.

  • Without vibrations, pumps, compressors and high-speed frictional interaction of metal parts, AURAFLEX is very quiet. With a light-activated smart material at the core of actuation, it's as quiet as turning a light switch on and off.

  • AURAFLEX is constructed using flexible components, each with a bending radius of <10mm, resulting in very high flexibility allowing it to conform around sharp bends, ideal for soft robotic applications and conforming-fit wearable devices.

Actuators tend to be bulky, heavy, rigid and expensive due to their high complexity. But nature's actuators are muscles. Muscles are powerful yet compact, lightweight, silent and flexible.

AURAFLEX is an actuator reinvented. Inspired by human muscle.

At Dennisson, we develop AURAFLEX, an artificial muscle that harnesses the power of smart material technology (materials that are designed to move or change shape as a response to external stimuli). When irradiated with bright light, it contracts pulling weight several hundred times its own within seconds. This contraction distance can be varied from 0-30% its length, enabling new functionalities within Soft Robotics and Wearable Technologies to become possible.

ACTUATION MODES

LINEAR

With simpler and less components to actuate, AURAFLEX can deliver linear actuation in a compact form factor and yet remain lightweight allowing for a wide range of applications.

CURVED

AURAFLEX is constructed using flexible components, each with a tight bending radius resulting in very high flexibility allowing it to conform around sharp bends. Ideal for soft robotic applications, wearable devices and more.

CONCENTRIC

AURAFLEX can be wrapped around objects to induce a concentric actuation to compress, squeeze or induce pressure without the bulk (or noise) of traditional pneumatic systems.
